About the event
From March 27 to August 25, 2025, MoMA PS1 presents I was wearing this when you met me, the first solo museum exhibition of Whitney Claflin, whose paintings and multimedia practice channel the raw, shifting energy of memory, desire, and subcultural identity.
This focused exhibition features paintings, drawings, photography, video, and sculptural interventions that collide personal narrative with cultural detritus. Claflin’s work careens between lyrical abstraction, breezy sketch, and pop-culture reference, embedding everything from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to 1970s flower-power motifs within a visual mixtape of fleeting impressions and poetic irreverence.
Exhibition highlights:
Paintings that blur text, logo, sketch, and symbol into visceral visual poems
Nod to NYC bar culture, late-90s DIY aesthetics, and nostalgic fragments of adolescence
A practice informed by misrecognition, infatuation, and emotional collage
