Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center presents Tomokazu Matsuyama: Morning Sun, an evocative solo exhibition exploring solitude, identity, and cultural symbolism through a contemporary lens. Running from June 20 to October 5, 2025, this show features new and recent works by Tomokazu Matsuyama (Matsu)—including the monumental centerpiece, Morning Sun Dance.
Inspired by Edward Hopper’s 1952 painting Morning Sun, Matsu’s interpretation pivots from mid-century stillness to a richly layered meditation on modern identity. His central figure—a solitary woman surrounded by personal artifacts like dogs, magazines, and a Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali poster—reflects on material life, cultural convergence, and introspective awareness in the 21st century.
Matsu’s juxtaposition of Japanese and Western design motifs, symbolic animal figures, and densely constructed domestic spaces recontextualizes Hopper’s themes of isolation and light into a global, consumer-driven age.
