In Shifting Landscapes, the Whitney Museum invites visitors to reconsider what a landscape truly is. Far beyond idyllic panoramas, this exhibition brings together bold, thought-provoking works that interrogate the ever-changing dynamics of land, power, and identity—from the 1960s to today.
Drawn entirely from the museum’s collection, the exhibition weaves together sculptural assemblages, ecofeminist land art, experimental film, and documentary photography into thematic zones that reflect on geography, material culture, and fantasy as resistance. From the concrete chaos of New York City to speculative ecosystems where humans and nature fuse, these works challenge the notion of “natural” space and ask how our surroundings are shaped by politics, industry, and memory.
