Pace presents Robert Indiana: The American Dream, a major retrospective that confronts the duality of America’s greatest cultural myth—its radiant promises and shadowed truths. This immersive exhibition traces Indiana’s iconic work from the early 1960s through his later decades, examining his radical use of language, abstraction, and personal symbology to expose the underlying contradictions of postwar American identity.
Curated by Oliver Shultz, the show features cornerstone works such as:
The Calumet (1961): Honoring Indigenous cultures and revealing suppressed narratives.
The Black Marilyn (1967/1998): Addressing celebrity commodification and racialized desire.
The American Dream (1992/2015): A bronze sculpture marked by verbs of human experience—HUG, ERR, EAT, DIE.
