About the event
Masters at Work I presents two monumental works by New York City Ballet's founding choreographers, highlighting their profound ability to intertwine music and movement.
The Goldberg Variations: Choreographed by Jerome Robbins to Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, this ballet is a plotless exploration of the variations, presented in two parts. The first part features dancers in jewel-toned practice attire, while the second part introduces more formal costumes, culminating in full period attire for the final variation. The ballet, which premiered on May 27, 1971, is noted for its structural complexity and emotional depth.
Tschaikovsky Suite No. 3: George Balanchine's 1970 creation is set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3 in G Major, Op. 55. The ballet is a lush, four-movement work that culminates in the grand "Theme and Variations." Balanchine incorporated his earlier choreography from Theme and Variations into this suite, creating a seamless blend of elegance and drama.
