Eclectic NYCB II offers a perfect primer on the company’s multifaceted repertory, showcasing four distinct works that reflect the breadth and innovation of NYCB’s ballet tradition.
The program opens with a Balanchine classic, Divertimento No. 15, a scintillating ballet set to Mozart’s music. Featuring eight leading dancers, the piece is a series of variations that highlight classical technique and musicality, illustrating the elegance and precision that define Balanchine’s work.
Next, Peter Martins’ Zakouski follows, a ballet for two dancers inspired by the Russian tradition of hors d’oeuvres. The piece is set to music by four composers, from Tschaikovsky to Stravinsky, creating a vibrant mix of textures and moods in a captivating duet.
Gianna Reisen, one of the youngest choreographers ever commissioned by NYCB, presents her frolicsome Composer’s Holiday (2017), a playful work set to Lukas Foss’ piano and violin score that brings a lighthearted touch to the program.
