About the event
COPPÉLIA is a delightful and charming ballet that has captivated audiences for generations. Created in 1974 by George Balanchine with the help of famed ballerina Alexandra Danilova, this full-length production is a playful and frolicsome tale that pays homage to the father of classical ballet, Marius Petipa.
The ballet tells the story of a young woman, Swanilda, who poses as a doll in order to win back her paramour, who has been bewitched by the mechanical creation of the toymaker Coppélius. With its vibrant choreography and humor, COPPÉLIA continues to be a beloved classic in the NYCB repertory.
Balanchine’s staging of this ballet is filled with wit, energy, and whimsical charm, and it remains one of the most delightful works in the classical ballet repertoire.
