Urban Stomp: Dreams & Defiance on the Dance Floor is a landmark exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York, honoring over two centuries of dance as a vital form of expression, resilience, and joy in New York City. From the elegant ballrooms of the 1800s to today’s block parties and dance battles, this first-of-its-kind showcase explores how dance has shaped—and been shaped by—the city’s ever-evolving identity.
Visitors will journey through iconic and deeply rooted styles such as lindy hop, salsa, hustle, hip-hop, bhangra, vogue, and litefeet. Through immersive film, photography, fashion, interactive dance tutorials, and archival treasures, the exhibition celebrates collective movement and cultural fusion. Dance floors become spaces of solidarity, transformation, and urban defiance.
