About the event

A cherished gem of the Museum of the City of New York returns to the spotlight—The Stettheimer Dollhouse, fresh from a meticulous conservation process, is once again on view to captivate a new generation of visitors. Crafted over nearly 20 years by Carrie Stettheimer, this extraordinary dollhouse reflects the dynamic cultural energy of post–World War I New York, when the city was becoming a global capital of art, fashion, literature, and theater.

The dollhouse is more than an object—it’s a window into a vibrant circle of avant-garde creatives. Carrie and her sisters, Florine (a celebrated painter) and Ettie (a novelist and philosopher), hosted a legendary salon in Manhattan that welcomed the likes of Marcel Duchamp, Gaston Lachaise, Gertrude Stein, and Edward Steichen. Many of these cultural icons are represented in miniature form, with commissioned works and finely detailed rooms capturing the spirit of their time.

This reinstallation includes a rare new addition: dolls…
