About the event
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Museum of the City of New York, in collaboration with the Gotham Center for New York City History, unveils The Occupied City: New York and the American Revolution—a landmark, 7,000-square-foot immersive exhibition that transforms the Museum’s entire third floor.
This groundbreaking experience takes visitors deep into the urban heart of the Revolution, tracing New York’s evolution from a rebellious colony in 1763 to the first capital of a newly formed nation by 1790. Through historical artifacts, interactive installations, and vivid multimedia environments, the exhibition brings to life the city’s crucial role as a contested battleground between Patriots and Loyalists, and explores the complex realities faced by Black New Yorkers (enslaved and free), women, Native peoples, and ordinary citizens.
From a reconstructed 18th-century tavern to a Loyalist print shop and a haunting walk-through of “Canvas Town,” this multi-sensory journey makes the Revolution feel…
