About the event
April 9, 2025 – January 11, 2026 Whitney Museum of American Art Floor 5, Indoor & Outdoor Gallery
As part of her multifaceted presence at the Whitney, Marina Zurkow: Parting Worlds brings together a selection of her software-driven works, each exploring the fragile intersections between nature, technology, and human behavior.
Zurkow’s animated pieces—including Mesocosm (Wink, TX) and The Earth Eaters—use real-time generative systems to evoke landscapes shaped by resource extraction, ecological disruption, and shifting cultural values. The adjacent outdoor work, The River is a Circle, anchors the Hyundai Terrace Commission and extends the show’s narrative to the Hudson River and the historical layers of the Meatpacking District.
These works do more than depict scenes—they change over time, reflecting both natural phenomena and algorithmic randomness. “Parting Worlds” is a meditation on disconnection: between past and future, land and water, extraction and regeneration. It’s about what’s been lost—and what might still be saved.
