About the event
From May 29 to July 3, 2025, Yancey Richardson Gallery proudly presents Conjurer, the debut solo exhibition of Maria Antelman at the gallery. The Athens-born artist brings together work created over the past five years, exploring the interplay between photography, sculpture, technology, and the natural world.
Known for her lyrical, analog approach to image-making, Antelman uses 35mm film to create photomontages that intertwine the human body with natural forms—a limb with a tree trunk, a nose with a stone—disturbing our rational reading of both. These surreal constructions not only challenge the modern gaze, but also remind us of the spiritual and mysterious power of the organic world.
Exhibition highlights:
A visual dialogue between technology and nature, rendered through handmade photographic compositions
Sculptural works that treat the photograph and frame as dimensional objects, evoking natural forms
An artist talk on May 31 featuring Antelman, Jenny Calivas, and curator Katerina Stathopoulou
