About the event
Jack Shainman Gallery presents Regardez-moi, a moving tribute to Malian photographer Malick Sidibé, whose black-and-white portraits immortalized the spirit of a newly independent Bamako. This exhibition, on view at 513 West 20th Street, NYC, features a dynamic selection of Sidibé’s iconic works — including never-before-seen photographs and his extraordinary painted frames, created in collaboration with local artists.
From the intimate energy of 1960s dance floors to the quiet power of studio portraits, Sidibé’s images offer a rare glimpse into a young nation’s cultural rebirth. Through fashion, movement, music, and joy, his photographs explore themes of freedom, rebellion, identity, and self-representation — subjects that continue to echo across the global African diaspora.
The exhibition is accompanied by the release of Painted Frames, the first monograph exploring Sidibé’s reverse-glass collaborations, featuring a powerful essay by Amy Sall on the enduring impact of his legacy.
