Now on view at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial is a groundbreaking exhibition that redefines the concept of “home” through the power of design. Featuring 25 newly commissioned, site-specific installations, this seventh edition of the Design Triennial takes over the historic Andrew and Louise Carnegie Mansion, offering a deeply immersive experience across multiple floors.
Organized into three thematic sections—“Going Home,” “Seeking Home,” and “Building Home”—the exhibition delves into both the emotional and physical dimensions of home in the United States, U.S. Territories, and Tribal Nations. The works explore topics ranging from personal memory and domestic rituals to community resilience, decolonial architecture, and future housing models.
Installations are crafted by a diverse range of creators, including architects, designers, artists, and activists such as the Black Artists + Designers Guild, Designing Justice + Designing Spaces, Hugh Hayden, and La Vaughn Belle, among others. Together, these participants present stories…
