About the event
From April 24 to October 6, 2025, MoMA PS1, in collaboration with Visual AIDS, presents Love Rules, an archival exhibition housed in Homeroom that traces the early development of harm reduction practices in the United States through the lives and work of activists Heather Edney and Richard Berkowitz.
Featuring a rich mix of photographs, DIY publications, safe sex pamphlets, and activist ephemera, this exhibition explores how grassroots efforts by sex workers, drug users, and HIV+ individuals forged life-saving practices now embedded in public health models. It’s a vital reminder that harm reduction began at the margins, driven by those most impacted by the AIDS crisis and drug-related overdose epidemics.
Exhibition highlights:
Archival materials from Richard Berkowitz and Heather Edney, pioneers in harm reduction
Zines, photography, and safe sex guides developed by communities in crisis
A history of grassroots innovation in health activism and public policy
