About the event
James Turrell’s Meeting is more than a room—it’s a revelation. Installed on the third floor of MoMA PS1, this renowned Skyspace invites guests to sit beneath an open ceiling and witness the sky transform in real time, set against an ever-shifting multicolored lighting program. It's a moment of stillness, awe, and perception, made visible.
Turrell, a pivotal figure in the Light and Space movement, first envisioned Meeting in 1976. Although commissioned for the museum’s inaugural exhibition, it wasn’t completed until 1980 and wasn’t opened to the public until 1986. The installation has since become a spiritual touchstone for those drawn to the intersection of light, space, and contemplative experience. In 2016, Meeting was enhanced with renovated seating and a state-of-the-art lighting system, programmed to subtly synchronize with sunrise and sunset.
Visitors are welcome during regular museum hours, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Meeting closes during inclement weather, so plan accordingly for full immersion.
