About the event
Event Overview
From May 1 to August 1, 2025, Hauser & Wirth New York, 18th Street presents William Kentridge: A Natural History of the Studio—a compelling exploration of the artist’s lifelong relationship with printmaking. Featuring nearly thirty works on paper, this focused exhibition spans two decades of production and serves as a poetic complement to Kentridge’s larger cinematic works concurrently on view at the gallery’s 22nd Street location.
Far from being a supplementary practice, printmaking is central to Kentridge’s creative life, as he states: “a medium in which I could think.” The works on view—including photogravures, lithographs, aquatints, and woodcuts—unveil a layered and deeply personal visual language rooted in political memory, fractured identity, and historical reflection.
