About the event
An artist between beauty and brutality.
From October 9, 2025, to January 12, 2026, Neue Galerie New York presents a rare monographic exhibition on Erich Heckel—a founding member of the Brücke group and a vital voice in the evolution of German Expressionism.
Spanning from 1905 to 1920, the exhibition reveals Heckel’s transformation from vibrant, lyrical landscapes to emotionally complex portraits shaped by his experience as a medical orderly during World War I. At the heart of the collection is the powerful triptych To the Convalescent Woman (1912–13), featuring his muse and future wife Siddi Riha, whose presence haunts several of the show’s most poignant pieces.
Curated with loans from institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, Harvard Art Museums, and others, the show also features Heckel’s lesser-seen woodcuts—intimate, raw, and deeply modern. These rare prints showcase his innovation across media and his relentless pursuit of an unfiltered artistic language.
