About the event
Opening May 8, 2026, Dia Beacon presents a major exhibition of Lee Ufan, a central voice of the Japanese Mono-ha movement and a philosopher of form whose work invites contemplation through contrast, restraint, and relational tension.
This exhibition offers a rare pairing of Ufan’s sculptural and painting practices, staged as a continuous dialogue across the galleries. Rocks, steel, canvas, and pigment appear as neither composed nor discarded—but placed, timed, and activated by your very presence. In Mono-ha tradition, these objects aren't transformed; they’re understood. The viewer becomes part of the system, not separate from it.
Influenced by Eastern philosophy and global conceptualism, Ufan’s work challenges the Western notion of the artist as author, favoring material truth over manipulation, and space over spectacle. Here, absence is a form of fullness, and what’s not done is just as important as what is.
