About the event
Opening November 21, 2025, Dia Beacon presents a landmark exhibition of visionary Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica, a pioneer of participatory art and a founding force behind the Tropicália movement. At the center of this long-awaited presentation is Grande Núcleo (1960–63)—a monumental environment of suspended color, form, and interaction.
Unlike static canvas works, Grande Núcleo invites movement, presence, and play. Painted panels in blazing hues—from bright yellow to deep orange—float across a sculptural grid, drawing you into an environment where your body completes the art. This isn’t installation—it’s immersion. As Oiticica once insisted, “The viewer is the real artist.”
The exhibition also revisits earlier series like Metaesquemas and Monocromáticos, tracing the evolution from two-dimensional surface to spatial liberation. Oiticica’s work doesn’t just reflect Latin America’s political pulse—it transforms it into geometry, rhythm, and color.
