Opening September 12, 2025, 12 + 2 marks artist Duane Linklater’s most ambitious U.S. commission to date—a multi-sensory exhibition that reclaims space through architecture, ritual, and Indigenous presence.
Taking inspiration from the spiritual geometry of the teepee structure—twelve poles plus two, Linklater infuses Dia Chelsea with a circle of buffalo sculptures in mid-wallow, geological core samples, and live sound and dance events that activate the off-centered poles with ancestral meaning.
More than an installation, this is a cosmology: one where the wallowing of the buffalo regenerates land, where collaboration becomes ceremony, and where the gallery itself becomes a vessel of endurance, renewal, and motion.
Music by eagles with eyes closed, choreography by Tanya Lukin Linklater, and dialogues curated by Layli Long Soldier deepen the experience across dimensions of body, language, and earth.
