On view across from the Whitney and the High Line, Four Ways of Being is a striking public installation by celebrated artist Amy Sherald. Commissioned specifically for the Whitney’s Outside the Box program, this monumental facade work features four powerful portraits—some shown for the first time in New York—depicting subjects from different backgrounds and eras, existing side by side in a suspended moment of shared presence.


Sherald, known for her meticulous and symbolic portraiture, uses this large-scale canvas to explore the tension between time, memory, and identity. By placing historical resonance into modern visibility, she asks us to reflect on how our past continues to color our present—and how public space itself can become a platform for empathy, introspection, and transformation.
