Event Overview Step into a lush, tropical environment where hundreds of butterflies dance through the air in a kaleidoscope of color. Now open year-round at the American Museum of Natural History, the Davis Family Butterfly Vivarium is an immersive exhibit designed to delight the senses and ignite curiosity.

Inspired by AMNH’s beloved seasonal show, this gallery features up to 80 butterfly species at any given time—from the vivid common green birdwing to the elusive starry night cracker—as they flutter through a warm, verdant space filled with exotic plants and blooming nectar sources. Visitors can observe the fascinating life cycle of Lepidoptera up close, including at the pupae incubator, where butterflies emerge before your eyes.


This temperature-controlled gallery (kept at 80°F with high humidity) also includes interactive digital microscopes, a moth display featuring the massive atlas moth, and a rotating ID board to help guests recognize the featured species in real time. It’s a celebration of…
