This spring, join us at New York City Center for a bold and electrifying reimagining of Bizet’s CARMEN.maquia, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the timeless opera. Choreographed by Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, this highly original work explores the passion, defiance, and tragedy of the iconic character of Carmen.
“Picasso used to say that Carmen was like the bull that nobody could domesticate or control, no? So, we found that similarity where Carmen is like the bull, we just took ‘tauromaquia,’ and took ‘tauro’ out and put ‘Carmen’ in,” says Sansano, emphasizing the wild, untamed nature of Carmen’s character as portrayed in this captivating contemporary interpretation.
